Chapter Twelve

“Good morning everyone,” I greeted the family at the breakfast table while sitting down. Charlotte placed a plate of pastries between me and Addy. I was late for breakfast, and the family had started without me.

“I’m glad you’re here, Catherine, darling.” Father folded the paper he was reading and laid it on the table.

Oh no! When Father used darling after Catherine, he planned to tell me something he knew I would object to. I placed my hands in my lap, bracing myself for the bad news.

“Your mother and I have been talking, and since you’re too busy to meet eligible men, we have arranged a few dates for you with some of our friend’s sons. Maybe this will help you improve your social life.”

Kilian dropped his fork on his plate. The clink echoed through the now silent room. He stared at me, his wide eyes told me everything swimming in his mind: run, get away, and hide. I knew I was in a bad situation, but there was nothing I could do except sit and listen to them.

I tried to remain calm. “Thank you, Father, but I can manage on my own.”

“I’m sure you can, if you had more time. We’ve already discussed it, and we're helping you find someone to marry, your first date is at 7:30 tonight.”

I caught my breath feeling as though someone kicked me in the stomach. “An arranged marriage,” I raised my voice. “No, I won’t have any part of it. I will find someone on my own.”

“Now, Catherine,” Father’s voice matched mine.

I launched out of my seat, sending my chair scraping across the wood floor. “No, Father, no, I won’t do it. I’m an adult. I can make my own choices. I don’t need your help finding someone to marry.” I stormed out of the room and slammed the front door.

“How dare they . . . how could they do this to me?” I mumbled. My world was crashing in on me as my cheeks heated and the tears streamed down my face. I climbed in my car and screeched out of the drive way. “I love Landon, Father, and no one else,” I screamed between cries driving endlessly around town, racing between stoplights, leaving tire marks where I had been, trying to get rid of this nightmare. Why didn’t I see this coming? Why the rush? Did they scheme with one of their friends to unite the families through marriage? What was to become of me and Landon?

I sat in my car in the office parking lot, hoarse from screaming. My cheeks, wet from tears, as I stared at the bush in front of me too shocked to get out of my Mercedes. How could I live without seeing Landon? I couldn’t date two men at the same time. I mentally planned for his departure at the end of October, but not to see him while he still lived here was overwhelming.

I pushed out a calming breath, trying to release the tightness in my chest.
